Vinyl/PVC vs Polyurethane Garden Hoses
Lightweight hoses are appealing for obvious reasons, but low mass changes how a hose feels when empty. Vinyl/PVC and polyurethane designs can both work well; construction quality matters more than assuming one material always wins.
Vinyl/PVC basics
Basic vinyl hoses are often among the least expensive choices. They can be perfectly adequate for light seasonal work, but some become stiff in cooler weather or develop strong packaging memory. Reinforcement improves pressure capability but can also affect bending behaviour.
Polyurethane basics
Polyurethane can make a thin, relatively light hose with good abrasion resistance. Depending on formulation, it may stay flexible in conditions where inexpensive PVC feels rigid. Because it is light, however, it may not settle onto the ground the way a heavier rubber hose does.
Handling beats the material name
If hand-coiling matters, physically compare how readily the hose forms a broad loop. Online specifications seldom quantify rotational stability. Weight per length, minimum temperature and return policy can be more informative than generic words such as “premium.”
Choose for the job
For a short balcony or patio hose, low weight may dominate. For a long yard run that is hand-coiled after every use, calm handling may be worth extra weight. There is no reason the same construction must win both situations.
