Garden Hose Glossary: Kink, Coil Memory, Torsion, Burst Pressure and More

Garden-hose terminology is inconsistent. This glossary defines the terms as they are used on Garden Hoses Explained so readers can compare behaviour without confusing marketing words.

Handling terms

Kink: a sharp local bend or collapse that restricts flow. Coil memory: tendency to return to previous curves or storage shape. Torsion: twisting around the hose’s long axis. Directional stability: our practical term for how consistently a hose forms same-plane loops without unexpected reversals. Lay-flat behaviour: how readily a straightened hose stays settled rather than springing into coils.

Construction terms

Inner tube: the water-carrying layer. Reinforcement: braid, mesh or other structure that helps the hose withstand pressure and control expansion. Jacket: outer protective layer. Strain relief: flexible support near a rigid fitting that reduces sharp bending.

Water terms

Flow rate: volume delivered per unit time, often litres per minute or US gallons per minute. Pressure: force per area, commonly PSI or kPa. Pressure loss: reduction in pressure available as water moves through hose, fittings and attachments.

Rating terms

Working pressure: pressure range intended for normal operation as specified by the manufacturer. Burst pressure: a failure-test value that should not be treated as a normal operating target. Temperature range: manufacturer-stated conditions in which the product is intended to function.

Marketing terms

Words such as “premium,” “professional,” “heavy duty” and “all weather” have little value unless they are tied to specific construction details or performance data. “Kink-free” should be treated as a claim to investigate, not a universal promise.
