Garden Hose Fittings: Threads, Materials, Washers and Strain Relief

A durable hose body can still be ruined by poor end fittings. Threads, washers and the transition between rigid fitting and flexible hose deserve as much attention as the jacket material.

Thread standards vary

North American garden hoses commonly use garden-hose thread fittings, while other regions use different tap and connector standards. Do not assume a hose or adapter bought internationally will fit without checking the specified thread and size.

Metal is not automatically better

Brass and other metals can be durable, but material alone does not guarantee precise threads or a good crimp. Plastic fittings can be perfectly serviceable in light duty. Inspect how securely the fitting is attached and whether the design provides strain relief.

Washers solve many simple leaks

A missing, hardened or damaged washer can cause leaking at a threaded connection even when the fitting itself is fine. Replace the correct washer rather than overtightening the connection and risking thread damage.

Watch the first few inches

The area immediately behind the fitting experiences repeated bending and tugging. A sleeve or other strain-relief design can reduce sharp bending at this transition. If a hose repeatedly kinks right behind the coupling, the end design may be part of the problem.

Quick-connects add convenience and restriction

Quick-connect systems make switching tools easier, but every extra fitting can add a little flow restriction and another sealing surface. Choose a bore appropriate to your flow needs and periodically inspect O-rings or washers.
